Ecommerce - usage differences between the EU, US, and Asia

E-commerce is a rapidly growing industry worldwide, and the differences in adoption and usage between regions can be striking.


In Europe, we see a steady increase in online shoppers.

In contrast, the US has an even higher rate.

Asia, on the other hand, has the highest.


One key difference is the prevalence of marketplaces like Amazon and Alibaba in the US and Asia, respectively.


These platforms dominate the e-commerce landscape and drive significant online sales.


Amazon accounts for about 50% of all e-commerce sales in the US - Crazy numbers!!


Similarly, in Asia, Alibaba's Taobao and Tmall marketplaces account for more than 80% of China's online retail market. In Europe, the market is more fragmented, with a broader range of retailers and marketplaces such as Amazon and Zalando, but no one marketplace dominates the market.


A recent study found that in Europe, online shoppers are making an average of 5 purchases per month, with an average purchase value of $60. In the US, the average number of purchases per month is slightly higher at 6, with an average purchase value of $85. In Asia, the average number of monthly purchases is the highest at 8, with an average purchase value of $50.


Another key difference is the usage of mobile devices for eCommerce. In Europe, only 55% of online purchases are made through mobile devices, compared to 70% in the US and 80% in Asia.


Another important consideration is the role of social media in e-commerce. In the US and Asia, platforms such as Instagram and WeChat have become integral to purchasing. Many consumers discover and purchase products directly through these channels. In Europe, social media has yet to have the same impact on e-commerce.


Despite these differences, it is clear that e-commerce is a global phenomenon, and trends in one region are likely to impact others. For businesses looking to expand their online presence, it's essential to understand each market's unique characteristics and adjust their strategies accordingly.
